Fillings

Sugary foods and beverages combined with inadequate oral hygiene create a thriving atmosphere for dental cavities. A single cavity, left untreated, can spread to the entire tooth. Our dentists treat cavities by removing the damaged portion of the tooth and replacing it with  fillings. Although there are some cases appropriate for metal fillings, typically white fillings are placed to allow you to maintain a natural-looking smile.

What causes cavities?
Food debris and natural oral bacteria can build up on your teeth in the form of plaque. Over time, plaque hardens into tartar, which can only be removed by a dental professional. Tartar releases toxins that eat away at tooth enamel, creating dental cavities.

How do I know if I have a cavity?
You may feel some sensitivity or notice a black spot on your tooth. However, these symptoms only exist after the cavity has reached an advanced stage. In most cases, the patient is unaware of a problem until they visit the dentist’s office. Using X-rays and magnification, the dentist can find areas of decay not visible to the naked eye.

What are the benefits of white fillings?
White fillings pose several benefits over traditional metal (amalgam) fillings. Aside from their favorable appearance, white fillings also allow us to preserve more of your natural tooth structure. In addition, white fillings create a strong tooth-filling bond, insulating the tooth and protecting it from further damage. With proper care and maintenance, white fillings can last 7 to 10 years.
