Even those patients with good oral hygiene need to visit the dentist regularly for professional cleanings. Plaque and tartar collect below the gum line, beyond the reach of a tooth brush and dental floss. If left to fester, plaque and tartar can cause tooth decay, as well as gum disease. The hygienist will remove tartar buildup, assess any existing dental work, and polish your teeth to remove surface stains and prevent bacterial attachment. She can also offer homecare techniques and recommend over-the-counter products, like fluoride, which curbs sensitivity and strengthens tooth enamel.
